Before we get into the freelance link roundup, a quick anecdote from the only real-life roundup I’ve ever been involved in. At the time, I was the managing editor at Golf Illustrated magazine, and my wife and I had been invited on a fam trip to the Flathead Lake region of Montana. (Absolutely gorgeous area. If you ever get the chance to go—take it!) Over the course of the weekend, we played golf and went whitewater rafting, and then spent a day on a dude ranch. [Read more…]
New book on work-life balance for the self-employed
I’m absolutely thrilled to announce publication of the first book in the Dr. Freelance Advisor Guide series: Juggling on a High Wire: The Art of Work-Life Balance When You’re Self-Employed, by Laura Poole. (Available on Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle versions.)
As enjoyable and rewarding as self-employment can be, it’s not without its challenges—not to mention the nagging temptation to work all the time! Juggling on a High Wire helps you keep the balls in the air and your toes on the wire, including: [Read more…]
The top 4 freelancer pet peeves
There are plenty of things to love about freelancing: freedom, flexibility, and those splendid days when you get 2 or 3 checks in the mail. But what about those times when things don’t run so smoothly? Here are the four most common day-to-day problems that freelancers face…and some thoughts on what you can do about them.
Finding new freelance clients
Actually, let’s amend that slightly: Finding new freelance clients that are a good fit for your business. Here are a few thoughts on where to start: [Read more…]
Your Super Friends: Complementary freelance creatives
I was at a networking meeting a week or so ago with some fellow small-business owners, and the topic came up about advice our parents had given us about business. One of the attendees mentioned that his dad told him, “You need a banker, a lawyer, and an accountant.”
While most freelance creatives might need those professionals, I contend a healthy business in our field needs a network of Super Friends: i.e., complementary freelancers who have a different superpower from yours. If you’re a Wonder Woman freelance writer or editor, you need a Superman to handle the graphics side of things, and if you’re a Batman freelance graphic designer, photographer, or illustrator (etc.), you probably will be well served by Robin as your Boy Wonder handling the words. (I’m sure poor, neglected Aquaman fits in there somewhere—so check out the video at the end of the post.) For example, during the revamp/relaunch of this website back in August, I could not possibly have pulled it off without an outstanding creative team to support me. [Read more…]
The 1 simple question you must ask every new freelance client
After all these years, I like to believe I’m pretty skilled at avoiding red-flag clients.
Alas, I’m writing today to confess an unforced error, because I recently neglected to ask the 1 simple question you must ask every new freelance client:
What’s your past experience working with freelancers? [Read more…]
Friday freelance link roundup
Deadlines and a pile of long-term projects absorbed my energies this week, but there’s always time for a Friday freelance link roundup, eh? Truth be told, not all of these are about freelancing directly—as I always recommend, you should have an eye out for related concepts that can be applied to your business. If you’re a freelance writer and only read freelance writing blogs, or a freelance graphic designer who only reads (you know where I’m going here) blogs about design, you’re missing out! [Read more…]
