Jake Poinier, a.k.a. Dr. Freelance, made the freelancing leap in 1999 after a decade of positions in magazine editing, sales and marketing, and public relations. As the founder and owner of Boomvang Creative Group, Jake’s client list includes Insight, Apollo Group, AT&T, Starwood Hotels/Troon Golf, National Speakers Association, Behr, Henkel, and Johnson Controls, as well as a diverse array of small businesses, graphic design agencies, web firms, and ghostwriting clients. His feature articles have appeared in USAToday, Ritz-Carlton Magazine, Blue Water Sailing, Golf Illustrated, and Speaker, to which he is a regular contributor. Over the course of time, he’s written and edited everything from brochures, white papers, and websites to radio ads, video scripts, and speeches for Fortune 500 CEOs.
By having spent significant times on both sides of the desk—as a freelancer and as an editor of several national magazines—Jake brings keen insights to the challenges of freelancing and hiring freelancers. In fact, that was why he created the Dr. Freelance blog: to share his knowledge with fellow freelancers, and to improve client-freelancer relationships and understanding.
In addition to helping more than a dozen authors with their own writing and ghostwriting projects, Jake is the author of three books in the freelancing field: The Smooth-Sailing Freelancer, The Science, Art and Voodoo of Freelance Pricing and Getting Paid, and Help! My Freelancers Are Driving Me Crazy, winner of a Writer’s Digest Nonfiction eBooks Award. Find out more about the Dr. Freelance Guides.
Jake is a graduate of Yale University with a B.A. in English, and his current professional memberships include the American Copy Editors Society, Independent Book Publishers Association, and Editorial Freelancers Association, for which he serves as an instructor for numerous educational webinars on freelance topics.
In his spare time, Jake enjoys sailing, golfing, skiing, rowing, hiking, DIY projects, and traveling with his wife and kids. Although he has no human coworkers, his loyal dogs Mowgli and Shanti are constant fixtures in his office.
