I received an email this week from a client that I assumed I’d never hear from again. It hadn’t been a bad breakup, simply that my main contact left and her replacement had different freelance writers in her stable. With a whopping six-year gap between communications (a personal record), I was reminded of one of my favorite freelance phenomena: Halley’s client, you know, the clients that enter into your orbit only once in a great while. They’re not a bad thing, but don’t exactly provide dependable income, either. [Read more…]
IBPA Publishing University conference recap
Last weekend, I attended the Independent Book Publisher’s Association (IBPA) Publishing University in Salt Lake City, Utah. I thought a conference recap might help other self-published authors, freelance editors, and indie publishers who are considering attending next year’s event in Portland, Oregon, April 7-8. Laura Poole has put together lots of strategic advice for solopreneurs who want to be more effective at task management, time management, and overall life balance. So check it out! [Read more…]
Friday freelance link roundup

At the time, I was the managing editor at Golf Illustrated magazine, and my wife and I had been invited on a fam trip to the Flathead Lake region of Montana. (Absolutely gorgeous area. Friday freelance link roundup
Deadlines and a pile of long-term projects absorbed my energies this week, but there’s always time for a Friday freelance link roundup, eh? Truth be told, not all of these are about freelancing directly—as I always recommend, you should have an eye out for related concepts that can be applied to your business. If you’re a freelance writer and only read freelance writing blogs, or a freelance graphic designer who only reads (you know where I’m going here) blogs about design, you’re missing out! [Read more…]
